This years theme for our homemade Halloween costumes is camping! We love making homemade costumes for our boys and always come up with a theme for the three of them.
Homemade Camping Halloween Costumes
We recently bought a vintage camper that my husband just finished restoring and thought that camping costumes would be fitting this year. Each year we enter the city of Marietta, GA costume contest and these took 1st place in all age groups along with the grand prize! Yay!! These costumes cost us less than $10 dollars to make all of them together!
Our Vintage Serro Scotty Travel Trailer
Vintage Camper Costume
My husband created a replica of our camper for my 8 year old made out of a refrigerator box! He used spray paint to decorate….
Campfire Costume
My husband made the base from cardboard and spray painted cut up pool noodles for the logs. The stones are packing bubbles spray painted grey. With a sharp knife I poked holes in the logs (pool noodles) and stuffed red, orange, and yellow tissue paper in the holes. With red thread I sewed the tissue paper in the hat using 1 stitch so I could easily remove it. I taped the tissue paper together so it would stand up straight. We painted his face with flames to blend in. We popped a couple of jumbo marshmallows on sticks for him to hold and roast!:)
Toasted Marshmallow Costume
We tried to think of something comfortable and easy for my 2 year old to wear that he wouldn’t try to pull off. He loved this and it turned out so cute. In fact he was the definite hit of the costume contest!
This is so easy to make. My husband took a piece of foam and cut it to size. Cut out a round piece with a hole in the middle and glue to the top. Cut holes from the sides for the arms. Paint it white and then use brown spray paint on the top and bottom to give it that roasted look. Glue Velcro to the back so it will hold together. Push a stick in the back side and that is it! We had him holding a Hershey bar and Keebler graham cracker. I never give him chocolate and he gobbled that Hershey bar up so fast on stage! It did keep him focused and still, however he was quite wired that night!
Here we are at the Marietta square costume contest.
Other Homemade Halloween Costumes
Here are some fun costumes that we have made from previous years using boxes, fabric, and foam. My husband always amazes me with what he can make with boxes. We usually go with what we already have and keep all 3 costumes under 20 bucks.
Sea Life Costumes
2011. My husband made the shark from a cardboard box and I made the octopus from fabric and pool noodles and my mom sewed the seal.
Antique Auto Costumes
2010. My husband made the gas pump and roadster from cardboard boxes and I made the little oil can from foam and material. 1st Place group and individual.
Pirate Ship and Treasure Chest Costumes
2009. My husband made these from cardboard boxes and I decorated them. Both 1st Place in their age groups.
Robot Costume
2008. My husband made this robot costume for my oldest son. Isn’t it so cool?! Grand prize winner!
Skunk Costume
2008. My mom made this costume for my middle son.
Billy Goat Costume

How did you do the marshmallow??
Hi Jaclyn. We used foam, probably about 1 inch thick and cut the holes for the arms and then glued the round top on. We used velcro to attach in the back. We used spray paint to color the charred areas.
You inspired me to create a campfire costume. Yours is so cute!
I asked back in July but got no reply so as the time is getting near I hope you don't think I'm being impatient if I ask again. I'm anonymous (above) (that's wasn't so no would know who I am it just was what happened to come up when I submitted) and am still waiting on your reply as to how to hold the "campfire" up. I don't see any straps, unless they are under the shirt, so was just wondering if you could help me out. Thanks, Marty
Hey Martha…so sorry & must have over looked your email. We just fit the cut out really snug…we didn't use straps.
Love the camping/campfire costume. We are going as S'mores this year. I'm the S'more, my husband is my fire. I want to use your fire idea but I have one question, how did you hold it up. My husband can't keep it from falling so was wondering what did you use to keep it from falling down. Will be waiting to hear from you. Thanks. Marty
