My cousin asked us to create an Owl Birthday Cake for her daughters 1st birthday yesterday. She wanted her owl smash cake to be lime green/blue for the colors and this is what we came up with!

This owl cake is very easy to make and we think it turned out so cute!

Owl Birthday Cake Ingredients

  • 2 Betty Crocker Chocolate Cake Mixes
  • White Frosting (3 1/2 cups or 2 cans)
  • Sky Blue Food Coloring
  • 1 Jumbo Marshmallow
  • 2 Regular Marshmallows
  • Lime Green Fondant
  • Orange Ice Cream Sprinkles
  • 1 Large Tootsie Roll
  • Wilton Icing Tip 98

How To Make an Owl Cake

  • You will want to find a oven safe small bowl and casserole dish that look about the same size.
  • Make both cake mixes according to the directions.
  • Grease the baking bowl and dish.
  • Pour your cake mix in the dishes, filling them a little less than half way.
  • Bake them for about 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Release the cakes onto a work surface and cut off the top to make it flat using a knife. Cut off just a little bit off of the rounded side to prevent it from rolling.
  • Place that piece on a plate or platter.

  • Spread white frosting on top.
  • Add the middle cake (from the casserole dish) on top and frost the top and the add the last bowl cake on top.
  • Add a little bit of white frosting on the front for the belly of the owl.
  • Tint the rest of your frosting with the blue food coloring.
  • Pipe the blue frosting around the entire cake using your Wilton tip.
  • Cut the ends off of your jumbo marshmallow using kitchen scissors.
Owl Cake preparation
  • Put your Tootsie Roll in the microwave for 8 seconds and then flatten it out on a work surface.
  • Cut out two small circles to make pupils.
  • Attach them on the marshmallow ends using a little bit of the frosting.
  • Press the eyes on the front.
  • Cut the other regular marshmallow in half at a angle to make ears.
  • Press a toothpick in the ends and place them on the top sides.
  • Cut the other marshmallow in half and add them on the sides for wings using a toothpick.
  • Frost the tops using your blue icing.
We used orange ice cream sprinkles for the beak & feet

We used orange ice cream sprinkles for the beak and feet. You can always buy or make your own orange fondant as well.

We purchased pre-made lime green fondant from Michael’s to save time. We made a bow and little triangles for accents on the front out of the green fondant.

That’s it! I promise…this is such a cute little 3D Owl Cake! Just start creating with what you have on hand and you can change any of these things up to what you have handy.
